Tough Toughened Glass

There are many kinds of glasses like cylinder glass, sheet glass, rolled plate glass, polished plate glass, figure rolled glass, float glass, prism Glass, annealed glass and laminated glass available in the market, but toughened glass has a place of it own because of its unique advantages.

Toughened glass is processed under controlled heat or chemical treatments. Its strength and durability is more as compared to a normal glass.

Toughened glass is very strong, has enhanced resistance to heat, and breaks into small fragments rather than remains when broken. This property of Toughened glass makes it a better substitute to normal glass which breaks into extremely minute pieces when hit with a sharp object. Toughened glass is often used when strength, heat opposition and safety are prime considerations.

Toughened glass, also known as tempered glass is a type of safety glass that has increased strength. Toughened glass is not preferred on automobile windshields because if a small stone hits the windshield at speed, it would shatter into small squares endangering the lives of the driver and the fellow passengers. However, some form of toughened safety glass is used for cooking and baking. Some worldwide famous manufacturers of the safety glass include Pyrex, Corellas, and Arc International. Toughened safety glass also finds its use in buildings. In commercial structures it is used in such as frameless doors.

The term toughened glass is usually used to describe fully tempered glass but is sometimes used to describe heat strengthened glass as both types undergo a heat ‘toughening’ process.

Rudolph A. Seiden, an Austrian born in 1900 held the first patent on tempered glass or toughened glass.
